Day 15

The Mindset

Parkinson’s Law states that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

I leverage my time to my advantage and stay on the winning side of this law. It’s been true every single time I tested it. Used as a tool, Parkinson’s Law will give you superpowers.

My tests have run the gambit from no timeline – just “letting it be” right up to not preparing the opening joke [the most important moment of a show IMO] until I was actually walking onto the stage. Work expands or contracts so as to fill the time available for its completion.

The truth is, I can complete work brilliantly in 15 minutes if that’s what I have. I can also do make magic in 2 weeks if that’s what I have. The 15-minute session is a thrill ride of creativity and instinct. The second is a holiday dinner where a few of the last guests just won’t leave. Mastering this law can make the right personality type more efficient, streamlined, and creative. I don’t know if it works for everyone, but laws, by nature, usually do.

We have been together at this time for 2 weeks and we have 1 more ahead. Today we will test Parkinson’s Law in an effort to make big strides toward the one idea you’ve sat on for way too long. It’s the one you told me about when you first joined.

If you are willing to not be perfect, to take action before you’re ready, to risk positively impacting the world while making mistakes – recommit to fast-action for the final 7 days and let’s do remarkable work. Are you in?

The Fast-Action

  • Have your “what you’ve sat on for too long” in front of you.
  • State it clearly, “I want to __________________________”
  • Add the words ‘so that’ to the end and finish that sentence
  • It might initially be money, but the gold is under that – and we’ll get to it
  • Next sentence: So that…
  • On this one, you look at life-change – what will be different with this creation complete?
  • Next sentence: So that…
  • Now we look at the impact on the people who will be the recipients of your creation
  • Next sentence: So that…
  • Now we look at how it will impact the world – when those recipients have experienced it
  • Next sentence: So that…
  • And finally what message does it send to you about yourself, your abilities, your impact?
  • With all that written and FELT – we create the single sentence that our Big Why for this project.

You can use this for anything you want. Spend some time digging into this today – right now if you can.

Photo of the Day

I figured out the audio problem with the video – one click of one button. Ah, such is life. Contemplate what you’ll have to risk to both achieve, and not achieve, what you’ve sat on for too long. There is some of both!

The experience of actually completing it, as you know, will be a 3rd reality!

What’s at Risk?

  1. My big why: I want to start my social skills business so that I can feel completely whole from putting all my gifts out into the world and so that I can get more people connected to each other in a world of isolation from technology.
