Mindset
“Overwhelm”. The word is heavy. Mired in stories about the passage of time that could and should be better spent. It’s the bedrock of procrastination. The realm of FOMA and regret. Looking at the history of human existence, the presence of overwhelm in our lives only occupies the last 1/128” of an inch of a 100-yard football field. Yet it’s the excuse that I’ve used to give myself a pass on the challenges that didn’t seem doable, the opportunities that I told myself I didn’t have time for, and the lies I’ve told myself and others instead of just owning that I was a scattered mess. The dance between overwhelm and fast-action is a tango, a foxtrot, and a dash of full-contact-moshpit so trying to understand it is a folly. Know this – you’re not alone. Today we will shed some light – and take a few fast-actions – to reclaim ourselves from overwhelm. And while there isn’t a magic bullet, each decision we make is a vote for, or against, our relationship to overwhelm.”

The Action
-
- Define your mission for the rest of the day. Don’t overthink it – this is the small slice that is done quickly. You can do a bigger one tomorrow if you’d like. Yes – weekend days have a mission! Either defined by you or someone else. I create a world of _________ by ________.
- Close eyes – Picture yourself on mission. See something come up to interrupt you. Create a physical anchor to reinforce what the CEO who is YOU will do to stay on task.
- List 3 activities you have today that you can batch into a short time instead of having them linger and tug at your mission. Can you combine them? Can you delegate one out? Can you batch it into a category for another day?

Run this through your brain in terms of overwhelm! It’s all changed so fast and the best decision we can make is to follow our mission.

Barry,
At some point you say something to the effect: “Key Performance Indicators are left-brained, and celebrations are right-brained.” Is this an original quote? Or what is the source? I am thinking about incorporating the statement into a workshop/presentation I have on the back-burner, and I want to give credit where it is due.
BTW, my snarky side added in my head. “So don’t be a half-wit.”
Jim
Hi Jim,
Yep – it’s from my brain. A lot goes on up there and I try not to filter.
Thanks for asking. I am a HUGE fan of attributing to those from who I quote.
Super. I will be using it. Thanks!
My mission for the day was to do the gratitudes I hadn’t done from yesterday by 4pm today. I have done them. And I feel great about it.
And I’ll add that I’m grateful for Barry keeping after us to actually do some of the Fast Actions and not just lurk on the calls and think about it. 🙂
Good luck to everyone doing this with me,
Kyle
Lurking is no good… we aren’t here for that. On Day 22 it’s up to you, but for 21, no lurking 🙂
Glad you jumped in, Kyle!
This weekend night I create a world of sober brainstorming by hanging out with my friends who don’t drink vs. my friends who ONLY drink.
This weekend day I create a world of precision by giving all my tasks a time limit.
LOVE these, AJ. I see you.
Man that video on metaphor about humans vs universe was interesting and powerful.
Thanks for the share Bazza. Definitely put things in perspective.
